In this paper, we show how these problems can be solved by using parallel algorithms based on stabilized compactication.

    Robustness of superconductivity to structural disorder in Sr0.3(NH2)y(NH3)1−yFe2Se2

    The superconducting properties of a recently discovered high-Tc superconductor, Sr/ammonia-intercalated FeSe, have been measured using pulsed magnetic fields down to 4.2 K and muon spin spectroscopy down to 1.5 K. This compound exhibits intrinsic disorder resulting from random stacking of the FeSe layers along the c axis that is not present in other intercalates of the same family. This arises because the coordination requirements of the intercalated Sr and ammonia moieties imply that the interlayer stacking (along c) involves a translation of either a/2 or b/2 that locally breaks tetragonal symmetry. The result of this stacking arrangement is that the Fe ions in this compound describe a body-centered-tetragonal lattice in contrast to the primitive arrangement of Fe ions described in all other Fe-based superconductors. In pulsed magnetic fields, the upper critical field Hc2 was found to increase on cooling with an upward curvature that is commonly seen in type-II superconductors of a multiband nature. Fitting the data to a two-band model and extrapolation to absolute zero gave a maximum upper critical field ÎŒ0Hc2(0) of 33(2)T. A clear superconducting transition with a diamagnetic shift was also observed in transverse-field muon measurements at Tc≈36.3(2)K. These results demonstrate that robust superconductivity in these intercalated FeSe systems does not rely on perfect structural coherence along the c axis

    Forecasting Interest Rates with Shifting Endpoints

    textabstractMany economic studies on inflation forecasting have found favorable results when inflation is modeled as a stationary process around a slowly time-varying trend. In contrast, the existing studies on interest rate forecasting either treat yields as being stationary, without any shifting endpoints, or treat yields as a random walk process. In this study we consider the problem of forecasting the term structure of interest rates with the assumption that the yield curve is driven by factors that are stationary around a time-varying trend. We compare alternative ways of modeling the time-varying trend. We find that allowing for shifting endpoints in yield curve factors can provide gains in the out-of-sample predictive accuracy, relative to stationary and random walk benchmarks. The results are both economically and statistically significant

    Magnetic fluctuations and spin freezing in nonsuperconducting LiFeAs derivatives

    We present detailed magnetometry and muon-spin rotation data on polycrystalline samples of overdoped, nonsuperconducting LiFe1−xNixAs (x = 0.1,0.2) and Li1−yFe1+yAs (0 y 0.04) as well as superconducting LiFeAs.While LiFe1−xNixAs exhibits weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations down to 1.5 K,Li1−yFe1+yAs samples, which have a much smaller deviation from the 1 : 1 : 1 stoichiometry, show a crossover from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic fluctuations on cooling and a freezing of dynamically fluctuating moments at low temperatures. We do not find any signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking in stoichiometric LiFeAs that would support recent predictions of triplet pairing

    Evaluation of non-chemical seed treatment methods for the control of Alternaria dauci and A. radicina on carrot seeds

    The current study was initiated to evaluate the efficacy of physical methods (hot water, aerated steam, electron treatment) and agents of natural origin (resistance inducers, plant derived products, micro-organisms) as seed treatments of carrots for control of Alternaria dauci and A. radicina. Control of both Alternaria species by seed treatment with the resistance inducers was generally poor. Results were also not satisfactory with most of the formulated commercial micro-organism preparations. Based on the average of five field trials, one of these, BA 2552 (Pseudomonas chlororaphis), provided a low but significant increase in plant stand. Among the experimental micro-organisms, the best results were obtained with Pseudomonas sp. strain MF 416 and Clonostachys rosea strain IK726. A similar level of efficacy was provided by seed treatment with an emulsion (1%) of thyme oil in water. Good and consistent control was generally achieved with the physical methods aerated steam, hot water and electron treatment. Aerated steam treatment was, apart from the thiram-containing chemical standard, the best single treatment, and its performance may at least partially be due to extensive pre-testing, resulting in dosages optimally adapted to the respective seed lot. In some of the experiments the effect of the hot water treatment, which was tested at a fixed, not specifically adapted dosage, was significantly improved when combined with a Pseudomonas sp. MF 416 or C. rosea IK726 treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the outcome of experiments in which the same seed treatment methods and agents were tested in other seed-borne vegetable pathosystems

    Property A is a non-equivariant analogue of amenability defined for metric spaces. Euclidean spaces and trees are examples of spaces with Property A. Simultaneously generalising these facts, we show that finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes have Property A. We do not assume that the complex is locally finite. We also prove that given a discrete group acting properly on a finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex the stabilisers of vertices at infinity are amenable
